Depends on what you like, when i travel abroad I always try to get in some of the local culture and cuisine. Anyway If you were to stay in the city I would recommend going to Bryant Park down on 42nd Street. It not too far from Times Square, but far enough that you don't get all the total stupidity and endless noise. There are a ton of nice things around the park.As for stores...... well I'm not too much of a shopper, so that I wouldn't really be able to tell you, I stay in Brooklyn more often than not, cause I truthfully hate the city, too many pricks and animals.
