Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update.

Today we have a render of a small and speedy Soviet tank, the BT-7.

The BT series of tanks were direct descendants of American Walter Christie's experimental tanks of the late 1920s. Following the rejection of his Model 1928 by the US Army, he offered the design up for foreign buyers. Soviet agents were able to purchase and export 2 prototype hulls as well as blueprints, despite the sale being without the approval of the US government.

The BT-7 was the last mass produced variant in the BT series of tanks. In common with its predecessors, it used the Christie suspension system. The large coil springs of this system allowed the road wheels a large range of movement, which meant that this tank could travel much faster over hard terrain than other tanks. For use on roads, the tracks could be removed and a chain drive connected to the rear road wheel. This allowed for very fast travel without damaging the tracks, but was found to be of little use on the largely unpaved roads of the Soviet Union.

The BT-7 was first used at the Battle of Lake Khasan against the Japanese. Operation Barbarossa saw the loss of a great proportion of the vehicles, many abandoned due to poor maintenance. They served in ever lessening numbers until the end of the war, with their final use in the Invasion of Manchuria in 1945. The BT-7 was made by Kraetzer.

Hello and welcome back to another Forgotten Hope 2 update.

As some of you might have noticed there wasn't an official news update in quite some time. This was mostly due to a period of inactivity, a period which is now luckily over. We hope the wait wasn't that hard to bear!

Today we have a render of a new light tank destroyer for the western and eastern fronts:

After the German 3.7cm and 5cm proved too weak to defeat more modern Soviet tanks it was decided to create a self-propelled tank destroyer to counter these threats. The result was the Marder (marten) series of tank destroyers, which served as a stop gap measure on all fronts, starting in 1942.

The Marder III version was based on the Panzer 38(t) chassis and mounted either a captured Russian 7.62 cm gun or the German 7.5cm Pak40. The Ausf. M used the Pak40 and was produced from November 1942 to May 1943. It was later replaced in its role by the Hetzer tank destroyer, which was also based on the Panzer 38(t) chassis. Surviving examples served until the end of the war.

The Marder IIIM was made by Kraetzer, Toddel and Hirsch and uses the MG42 model by Seth_Soldier. It is the fourth model of Marder available in FH2.

Hello and welcome to a very special update of Forgotten Hope 2!

Today is the 14th December 2012, which marks the fifth year since the release of Forgotten Hope 2.0. This is a long time in terms of gaming and especially in game modding.

Much has happened in these five years:
Three theatres of war comprising 4 major armies were created. Countless virtual soldiers got killed by our 139 ground vehicles, 24 airplanes, 30 guns and 110 hand held weapons. A mod of the year award was won and we saw many talented modders take part in the creation of all this.

But all the time and work involved was surely worth it, when we see all the fans who play on the servers every evening, discuss our new models and maps on our forums, help us with feedback and bug reports, or even just make up wild conspiracy theories about the next German Superpanzer.

Thank you for your support!
Stay tuned for next Sunday, where we showcase more of FH2's future!

Hello and welcome back to another update of Forgotten Hope 2!

As promised in the last news update on Friday, we have some nice Eastern Front teasers for you.

The first one is a heavy German tank destroyer which, while rare and relatively unsuccessful, left its mark on the Kursk offensive: The Panzerjäger Tiger (P)!

Better known under its official nickname "Ferdinand", after its designer Ferdinand Porsche, it was based on the chassis of the failed Tiger (P) prototype. It was the first tank destroyer to mount the powerful 8.8cm Pak 43/2 gun, which was able to knock out even the heaviest of Allied tanks. It also boasted an impressive front armor of 200mm. However, several design flaws made it a less than successful design. It was very slow and lacked maneuverability. Since it had no machine gun, it was vulnerable to close assault by Soviet tank hunters and sappers.

In light of our anniversary and in the spirit of the season we have some additional teaser screenshots, showing not only Russian vehicles, but also equipment of an as of yet unannounced faction: Finland! These were made during test sessions and should be regarded as far from finished. However, we thought some of you might get a kick out of seeing some Russian and Finnish tanks in action and the new statics you will soon be able to fight over. Note that not all of the maps shown will be released.

The road to Prokhorovka Part 3: getting at it again

When building a map it is very likely that at one point your work is being halted for some time.
In this case due to several reasons I even did not work on the map for more than 3 months.
In mid December I slowly started to get into the project again and am hoping to be developing at full speed sometime soon.

Since the basic setup was more or less  done, I decided to place some tanks on the map and as I'm sure some of you have witnessed, have a first playtest.

The goal of this playtest was to find out where exactly I have to do improvements in the maps composition to make tank combat as interesting as possible. As you can see on the minimap the map in the current state was rather plain, so there is plenty of room to do terrain modifications, place statics and overgrowth to ensure that tank fighting works.

One thing I realized pretty fast was that the routes to the flags needed to be altered.
With building new roads using the road and apply spline tool I try to make sure that important sections of those roads are better positioned on the map and also ensure that both teams have suitable routes to the flags.

Another thing to improve routes to the flag area is providing more cover, which can be done by changing the terrain, but in the rather flat river area of the map is mostly done with placing objects and overgrowth. For now all object and overgrowth placement is still makeshift and only has the role to be there and give me a better image of how the map is going to play out later.

While being at changing terrain features to a higher detail level I also for the first time started to think about on how to implemet my ideas of how the map is supposed to look. For now this is kept to a rather low level and is limited to creating flat terrain right next to the river that will later have a swampy look and is covered with reed or similar plants that grwow under such conditions.

That's it for today. Thanks for your patience and I'm hoping to be able to post here more frequently again.
