The Buzz bomb was propelled by an engine that worked on the principle of a jet engine. The original "jet engine" was developed by a Greek chap who lived in Syracuse during the fourth or fifth century BC. It was powered by steam. The V1 was powered by a spark plug that fired by compressiion. I'm not sure whether that makes it a diesel or an Otto

engine. When the spark plug ignited the vapor propellant the rapid acelleration of the fuel caused it to scream through baffles. Hence the intermitant Buzz Saw like sound that characterized the weapon. The V1 was originally dropped or launched from bombers which may explain the "bomb" terminology. THe RAF was good at shooting down German bombers so the Luftwaffe switched to a ground launch system.
A mortar shell is technically a bomb. It is launched by a solid fuel propulsion system.
IIRC the wings of the V1 were constructed of plywood!
