Memory Leaks or performance issues with some EF maps?
« on: May 24, 2011, 01:59:03 PM »
First off let me say what a stellar job I think you've all done thus far, IMHO I think you guys have put far more effort into EF than Relic have done thus far to their own game in general, which is sad but I and many others really do appreciate it.

As an amateur CoH mapper myself I understand how much attnetion to detail and effort went into the EF maps, my own extra large 4x4 map has taken weeks and weeks over a very long period of time, and I'm still not happy with it.

I just seem to be having some severe performance issues with these maps, my friends also have the issues.

Initially I felt it was a bottleneck with my system, it was an aging e6700 watercooled @ 3.8GHz with 4GB of DDR2 ram with 285GTX in it, I figured the maps that caused the biggest problems were extra large and it was a CPU/memory bottleneck.

I left it at that for a while and we played the original maps which run smooth as silk, recently upgraded my aging rig to sport an i7 2600k watercooled @ 5GHz and with 8GB of Vengeance DDR3 ram, tbh it seems as bad, if not worse.

I'm also seeing pink texture issues on some of the maps, usually just in one of the tooltip windows (saw these issues before the upgrade), they seem to be a precursor to the mapstarting to run badly, will post screenshots when I get home.

I don't think it occurs on all of the maps, I can't be more specific since friends don't want to play on the extra large EF maps for now and I have limited time to test them, the issue occurs pretty much everytime I play "[EF] Zhytomyr (4)" which is  a shame because it's probably my favourite CoH map.

Anyone else noticed these issues?

Aditional info

With V-sync forced off, system gets an average of 108.3 , max 262 and minimum 43 during the performance test.

Stability wise the system can run prime 95 or 3dmark all day long zero errors and temps of about 45-50 degrees C.

Zhytomyr is a huge memory usage map, just to much details on it.

Thanks for the response, I guess there are just some maps that will never run well.

I Figured it wa sa memory hog but expected it to run like silk once I went from 4GB DDR2 to 8GB DDR3, though I'm not seeing an actual increase in the amount of memory CoH is using regardless of the map, doesn't break the 4GB mark (on 64bit OS).

Guessing it's a limitation with CoH itself and as you pointed out when mapping we need to be extra careful how much we put in, probably need to revisit my own map once 've fully fleshed it out.

Thanks again.

There's a Tool around to increase the memory usage for game exe's, can´t get the name right now, but it's intended for 64 Bit OS user's to benefit from more than I think 3320 MB of Ram use.
Dunno if it'd work with CoH but I've read that it works with some games.

It won't work with RelicCoH.exe.
