My first thoughts on the Soviet faction
« on: March 14, 2011, 11:52:57 PM »
Just downloaded Eastern Front yeasterday to give the new faction a try.

Firstly great job on it all, not that easy to tell the difference between this and the real game quality wise.

My first thoughts on the Soviet faction are it is a bit overdone. So many units and upgrades compared to the others I couldn't really get to grips with what each thing does as easily as I could with the other factions. There seems to be able 8 different kinds of infantry and 9 or so tanks. The armoury upgrades were a tad overwhelming as well.

My suggestion would be to refine these units and upgrades so there aren't as many and to make it clear what each one does. For example having 4 tanks each with a specific purpose like the other factions instead of 8 or 9, many of which are overlapping on eachothers role. Less and more precise armoury upgrades might be a good idea as well.
The only other idea would be to create another Soviet faction and put all the excess unit types in there.

Good job overall though.

I understand how you feel. It does seem that the tanks have many purposes. T-90, I think, is used to support infantry against other infantry. So many of my units died to one. The T-70, I think it's good against halftracks and light vehicles. The T-34, Su-85, Is-2(sorry I can't think of all the tanks on the top of my head), but they appear to be multipurpose. The IS-2 is probably the counter to Tigers and panthers.
Guards of the Red Army. Today, the German Reich is done away with!

There really aren't many types of infantry at all. The upgrades don't do much except in the case of NKVD conscripts and sturmovie ingenery. It's like saying there are dozens of different wehr infantry because their stats change with each vet level.

For tanks:
T-90 anti-inf tank (Puma)
T-70 anti-vehicle tank (Puma upgun)
T-34/76 general tank (Sherman)
T-34/85 general tank (Sherman upgun)
SU-85/100 tank destroyer (StuG that works)
IS-2 heavy endgame AT tank (Panther)

Not that hard to work out. It probably just seems harder to know than the other factions because it's been so long since you had to learn them.

The thing I like about you Dennis, is that you do get things and think about them the right way  ;D

Plus, you tend to make simple and accurate statements LOL

I guess I will chime in here.  I like the idea of keeping the quantity of tanks to a reasonable number, if not for practical reasons as you play, but because the Soviets made very few numbers of the tanks that are in the game presently.  The T-70, T-60, T-50, etc. were made in small quantities.  In fact, the KV-1 was not built much after the T-34 showed itself to be so successful.

COH isnt married to historical realism nor is this mod. So thats why theres obscure units added for all factions, more fun! :)

Few numbers hey? Hmmm let me see....
KVs-5,219...roughly? and that's only until 43'
T70 - 8,226...roughly?

Now let's see...
Puma-800? roughly
Ostwind - 45 maybe?

Not that they have anything to do with COh cause its not a bloody painstakingly historical accurate simulation  ::)
