Soviet armored cars
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:06:22 PM »
One thing I've noticed is absent from the soviet arsenal are the various wheeled vehicles that were used in the conflict.

For starters the BA-64, a light recon car with a single machine gun.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BA-64

In direct combat it would be more or less comparable to the PE Scout Car, but could be upgraded from the soviet armory to mount a PTRD anti-tank rifle in place of the machinegun, to make it a very useful vehicle for hunting down light axis vehicles like armored cars and halftracks.

Another soviet armored car that was in widespread use during the first few years of the Eastern Front was the BA-10, a six wheeled vehicle armed with a 45 mm cannon, and two machine guns.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BA-10

It would provide heavier fire support and armed reconnaisance, but its low cost and high firepower would be offset by its very thin armor.

I suggested the BA10 in another topic but it was shot down because it was "too early war and not used past 1941"

T60 should replace T90 though.

Can be made a compromise.

Can be used T90 as a light and mobile/agile tank with better armor and firepower and cost increased, and armored car with much weaker armor and more cheap, coming in battle more early than tank.

I see no problem here, because other PE have armored cars and tanks, and use them with different purpose.

As I said... if it goes in, it will be a reward replacement. So Ford, you can still have your T-90, but everybody else has the choice to choose the T-60 if they so wish.

BA-10 is also an wonderful armored car, with great help for scouting and providing fire support in early game period, but not only...
This car is enough armored for immunity against small firearms, but one hit from AT weapons will completely destroy them.

From wikipedia :
During the late 1930s, Soviet armored fighting vehicle designers were using sloped armor on all new designs, and redesigning existing vehicles to take advantage of it. The BA-10 used a slightly smaller, better-sloped armor layout, which improved protection while saving weight. The greater engine power (50 hp compared to 40 hp on the BA-6) made the vehicle more reliable .

Like the BA-6, the BA-10 could be converted to a half-track by fitting auxiliary tracks to the rear pair of dual tandem wheels. On early BA-10s, these tracks were stowed strapped on top of the fenders. Later vehicles had an enclosed stowage box for the tracks in the same location. The tracks were often fitted when the vehicle needed to move across snow or soft ground, such as mud.

The BA-10 first time was used in actions against the Japanese in Manchuria at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol in 1939.

Later it was involved in all Soviet Union forces 1939-1940 operations and campaign.

The BA-10 was used against the Germans on the Eastern Front during World War II, but was rarely seen after the winter of 1941–42. Later in the war, the heavy scouting role was taken over by light tanks such as the T-60 and T-70. A few BA-10s were seen as late as 1943 on the Leningrad front.

Large numbers of captured BA-10s was used also by Axis powers in Europe. In May 1945 few BA-10s of ROA were fight alongside with defenders of the Prague uprising.

It was used after 1941,but in small number and situations.
What is used rare is always more than zero.
In what measure i don't know....but history and historians know.
If you read what is posted by me you will find that.

This armored car was used in early WW2 period on large scale, and this is the idea even for game >to use them in early period.Maybe can be good if this armored car will be replaced in late period by light tanks, after one research technology or command points but ,also,my suggestion is to benefit from this research only one doctrine...breakthrough.

Also this car can be used for new incoming german faction, because germans really use it,if we believe what wikipedia say.

I personally think that will be nice to see those armored cars on the battlefield, especially in a early-game to accompany those vulnerable conscripts in battle. They could be used similar to PEs armored cars and/or halftracks. Even they could be buyable from new building such as Motor Pool from US, only reskined...same way the other buildings are done. It would make good addition to late game and slow (except T-34) tanks from Tank Hall.

That's a relief, I adore the T-90 as well.  ;D

How about a BA-64 build from a soviet WSC (no tank hull required). It would have an PTRD anti-tank rifle upgrade (25-50ammo) and flank speed/overdrive so it could fight damaged PE ACs.

Sounds reasonable, but I want to keep my suggestions in line with the way the soviet forces work. Global upgrades for one. I'm just trying to figure out a way that works for the PTRD upgrade for BA-64, because it's a double edged upgrade, sacrificing anti infantry for anti vehicle capability. Maybe it could work in a similar fashion to the Red Banner Strelky, where you can buy the upgrade itself for free after buying it in the armory.

But yeah, WSC I think is the way to go, independant of the tank hall. Which I also think should apply to the existing medical truck. It's not a tank, why do you need the tank hall to get it?

Oh, and another use for the BA-64 could be similar to the PE scout car, IE locking down territory to increase resource income. Russians are the only army right now that can't do it.
