Back on topic: The way I see it, you want an offensive grenade to have a smaller blast radius because in theory, your moving toward the direction that your throwing. Smaller boom means less chance of your face catching your own shrapnel

 Still on topic as far as I knew. Albeit on a more parallel path.
 - Oh, that makes more sense. Kinda. I can't think of throwing
 'defensive' grenades at the enemy for a 'preparatory' barrage
 before I charge :). It's picked my curiosity now. Nonetheless,
 nice explanation :)

The meaning of "defensive" is that you should only use the grenade if you got some cover (as defense) so you won't get hurt by the fragments.
