Are you using the latest version of EF (1.800) on retail CoH? Then that's why you have the crash.
Eastern Front v1.8.0.1 is only compatible with the latest version of CoH which is 2.700, and you can get it only with Steam.You can get more information in our announcement [nofollow] for the patch.
