Low FPS issue
« on: April 11, 2013, 09:59:56 PM »
Hi all.
Does anyone here experience gradual drop of frame rate as a game progresses? Even when playing on 1vs1 maps the game turns into a slide show towards the end of the game. I ran a test with vanilla COH and frames were perfect. Apparently it's got something to do with the mod.
Advice needed.

First of all, you should not compare the performance of vanilla CoH against EF, because it is obvious the former will run perfect. Why? because the game was made to run fine with the four original factions. Then why EF sometimes lags? because it is a mod that adds a lot of new things, which the engine is not optimized to handle.

Thanks to DMz and Beefy^ we got a better performance now than in the past releases, but that only applies to PvP games and short skirmishes because as long as the AI push a lot of stuff, the resources needed to play are dramatically increased. So, if you don't want to have laggy games with EF, I have some advices:

  • Never play the infinite/unlimited pop cap mode.
  • Avoid very detailed maps, specially if they are 3v3 or 4v4.
  • Do not set shaders in "Ultra" in the graphics settings.
  • Playing Annihilation vs AI is not a good idea either, because most of the time those matches are long and tons of objects are created, draining a lot of resources.

If you combine Annihilation with unlimited pop cap mode, that spells doom so, avoid it as well.

Try this:

-- Right click on "My Computer"

-- Click "Properties"

-- Click "Advanced System Settings"

-- A new window should pop up

-- Under the tab "Advanced" click "Settings" under the Perfomance box

-- Another window should pop up saying "Performance Options"

-- Click "Change" under the "Advanced" tab

-- After clicking "Change" another window should pop up titled "Virtual Memory"; on this page something should be a list offering which drive you should select (if you only have one hard drive then you will be fine; it will already be selected by default)

-- Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size for drivers"; then select "Custom Size"

-- Finally there should be two boxes under your checked box: "Initial size (MB)" and "Maximum size (MB)"; change both of these values to "3092"(MB)...click "Set" and then click "OK"; then reboot the computer and you're all set.

This particular issue consists of stuttering frame rates about 15-20 minutes into your game. The screen jumps around or freezes for half a second every other second. It almost makes the game unplayable.

The reason you may be having "stutters" or "shutters" like this is because the CoH engine cannot support more than 3.33 GB; this is why changing the virtual memory available sets the game right (or at least it has for me!).

I hope this helps!
Let me know how it goes.

I didn't report my own post to "get more attention". First I posted it in General Discussion section, then I realized it would be more appropriate to place it under Tech Support. I couldn't find a way to move the thread on my own so I contacted moderators hoping they would move it for me.
