Dedicated sniper
« on: March 03, 2012, 06:17:18 AM »
I am not sure if this new "marksman" unit is supposed to replace the sniper but I think having a dedicated sniper/recon soldier with a scoped 98k is simply part of an Eastern Front aesthetic. Make him play like he does in vCoH but perhaps add a spotting ability or call-in artillery(doctrine locked).

I don't know, in the Ost Heer preview video that "marksman" was more like rambo. Will we see a counterpart to the Red Army sniper for Ost heer? I hope so.

Ostheer has enough units atm, and a normal sniper doesn't have a place on it otherwise the marksman will be redundant. So you can say marksman is the counterpart of the Red Army Sniper.

What do you mean? I do not consider a scoped assualt rifle to be a sniper weapon so at vet4 he gains a 98k or G43?

At Vet 4 (Ace isn't exactly Vet, but it will work as nomenclature for now) the Heckenschüetze (Marksman) can choose to become a Sniper Ace, where he gets a Kar98k Scoped, slow speed Camo, Explosives, and high Camo detection radius (IIRC of course)

The Marksman isn't a sniper as much as a dedicated marksman in a modern army, he operates less as a loner and more as part of an attacking army, eliminating targets at further ranges, but not at super long ranges like other snipers. He also shoots faster than most snipers, but doesn't start off too good because he comes in as a recruit, not a regular.

You can say that Ostheer concept follows these thoughts:

  • Their soldiers are experienced ones hence they start with vet1(means that are a bit stronger than normal).
  • Like with other german factions, their soldiers need more time to be deployed.
  • Besides being experienced soldiers, the Eastern Front Campaign was completely different from what they expected, hence they are treated as "Recruits" from the Eastern Front due to their lack of experience and they can progress to become veterans.

Atm we are testing some changes with the Sniper Ace thingy, but has nothing to do with the current role of the Marksman. The Ace don't have explosives atm, but new abilities :).
