Kaspersky all the way, ditch Norton

I feel sorry for you Guard I had Mcafee for a while, hated it, IT WAS JUST SO INTERFERING. (Same goes for Trend micro >.> a friend of mine had it and whenever I used his comp BAM there it was)

So yeah go with avast or something, however the free software such as AVG only use it as a stopgap, their good (I used AVG for a while) but their not highly maintained and updated against current virus' etc. They are updated eventually, just sometimes not fast enough.

Hmm, O.K., so do these anti-virus programs protect against other stuff, such as hacks?

If you want such tools (antivirus+anti-whatever) you should seek for an Internet Security solution (i think that's how they are called :-\) or just an antivirus + firewall.

Personally I use Spyware Doctor from PC Tools. It can activate while under attack from high powered Malware, Trojans, etc. particularly ones that restrict access to the Interwebs and internal files and neutralizes their programs. Then it gives exact coordinates of the location of all viruses in HKEY files and/ or the APPDATA files (or any other hiding place). Really good stuff, it saves my comp from some crazy shit. Its all free (at least the one i have) runs a thorough scan everyday and identifies any possible threats (even Cookies that might just me adware)

All antiviruses are very limited. I've used Norton 360 and its saved my life like 53 times over 3 years but you have to pay a subscription every year :(. But do what you believe. You can not rely on Windows defender, its a NO NO NO NO NO! Norton antivirus does suck I don't mind 360 but thats just me.
