How well did these tanks do in combat in WW2?
« on: April 12, 2011, 02:24:30 AM »
How well did the T-35, Nashorn, Stug III, and Sturmtiger do in battle? I've heard these tanks suck, or there weren't enough of these.

What would the Maus be like if it was finished?

stug III saw extensive combat eveywhere. I remember specifically  in battle of kursk they engaged t34s and could easily knock them out. they were decent assault guns, but were far from the best.

dunno about the rest

and by the time the maus would have been finished the Soviets would have had beast like the IS-7 which had the most modernized armor design of the period. and it had a bigger gun than the maus anyway at 130mm plus as usual soviets would have been able to build 10 for every 1 of the germans
Soviet is OP

About the german tanks:

StuG III was called "Panzer des armen Landsers" - Tank of the poor soldier. It was a great assault gun for infantry support. Later it was pulled into tank destroyer role because of its weapon and its low silhouette.
BUT StuG III wasnt any good option for the Panzer-Division because they need their battle tanks with rotary turrets.

The Nashorn was an great tank destroyer. Because of its powerful 8,8cm KwK 43 it was able to destroy all enemy tanks on great distance. So when a Nashorn fought out of an prepared position (not in an mobile and open field battle) it was quiet effective and deadly.

The Sturmtiger was a problem. Produced to fight against heavy fortifications it should just fight against this targets. But the small number of this tanks and the fact that the battles of the last war years had changed from aggressive offensive battles into defensive battles - all this changes and new situations had limited the effective and useableness of this tank.
When u watch the chronicle of this Sturmtiger companies u will find one, two, maximal three successful combats of the Sturmtiger like the battle of Warshaw or the battle of Wiltz (ardennes).

And the Maus; Well. Out of my view this tanks wasnt able to fight with great success. When the enemy would locate a Maus tank artillery and planes would fight down this hugh object. And because of its heavy weight the Maus wasnt able to fight an all grounds. Usage of this tanks would be too limited for successful combat use.
May the force be with you.

How well did the T-35, Nashorn, Stug III, and Sturmtiger do in battle? I've heard these tanks suck, or there weren't enough of these.

T35-Unreliable junk created at a time where some designers thought a tank should be a land battleship with many turrets. Not being WH40k but reality, this didn't work.

Nashorn - First attempt to mount the long 88 on a vehicle. Any good big gun even when mounted on a damn truck is bound to be successful under certain scenarios, much like the 17pdr which was mounted on pretty rubbish platforms. Overall design was poor having tin thin armour, open topped, very high profile and not all that good mobility.

Stug3-Probably the most successful german tank value for money. Cheap to produce in large quantities and able to take on all the main Soviet/US battle tanks 41-45. It had a K/D of about 2/1 by the end of the war. excellent war machine despite being a turretless tank.

Sturmtiger - A joke built at a time where crazy ideas about 'super weapons' were given approval only to produce complex machines whose immense short comings made them all but useless as tactical weapons.

MAUS- A very bad joke. There are 100+ good reasons why none of these 'super tanks', created by US/Brits/Soviet/Germans never made it to production and would never make it to the field.
Everyone made their own 1-2 prototypes and then realized....well that was stupid and a waste of time/resources.
It's why even now 66 yrs later with this high tech no one tries to make crazy oversized tanks - Dumb idea
