Post-Apocalyptic
« on: January 19, 2011, 05:48:59 PM »
I guess off topic is good place for that:
I'm a great fan of post-apocalyptic science fiction - that means books, movies, games and so on. Do you know any of those kinds? I'm totally bored playing Fallout and watching Jericho again and again...
Cheers
 :)

Does your apocalypse require nuclear winter? If so, perhaps you will find Metro 2033 interesting, or Stalker (they are both games). Concerning movies, I think The Book of Eli is post apocalyptic. If you count other other reasons for an apocalypse theres a fuckton of Zombie movies and games, most prominently Left 4 Dead. Borderlands(game) is also apocalyptic in tone.

Me to, let's see, maybe games S.T.A.L.K.E.R : shadow of chernobyl, clear sky, call of pripyat and Metro 2033 (book and game). That's all i know. Hmmm...and maybe old RTS - KKND (Krush, Kill and Destroy) 1 and 2.

Read "Metro 2033", it's a very good book on an hypothetical post-apocalyptic Moscow where citizen lives in the city's Metro due to a nuclear-holocaust.

On February will be released the sequel, "Metro 2034".

There is also the PC game, on Steam ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/43110/?snr=1_4_4__13 )

But the book is better.  ;)

Written by Dmitry Glukhowsky...good read. :)

EDIT Lol, we wrote together

Seems people here associate apocalypse heavily with nuclear war  ;)
If you're interested in the general setting of failing states or societies you could also try the Bioshock games. For a change in setting you could try the Mass Effect series which in itself isn't based in a "post apocalyptic world"(though if you're picky it actually is) but its plot centers on a reoccuring mass extinction event and thusly, an apocalypse of sorts ;-)

How many people answered  ;D
I've played Metro 2033, all Stalkers, Borderlands is tad boring. I have L4D2.
APOX looks... well like a mod for C&C Generals, tbh....
Bioshock is awesome, I can't remember how many times I've finished it  :)
Mass Effect is RPG game, isn't it?

Somewhat. It's a third-person shooter with rpg elements in character development and combat and a "full blown" rpg in terms of storyline/ interaction with npcs and party members. It's got it's faults but overall it's still an excellent game. The story continues through 3 games, so make sure to start with the first, decisions and the character is carried over from game to game.

I'm also a fan of post-apo, especialy a RPG system Neuroshima [nofollow](I with my friends tried to start making a mod for CoH that takes place in Neuroshima world, but despite to fact of including too much stuff we resigned for a while- maybe later), post-apo zombie games, post-apo aliens invasion games etc. I want to see a good post-apo MMO, because it's boring to see ANOTHER WoW clones without something original...

Well, they (Interplay) are working on Fallout Online atm. The only thing that might bar you from playing that is Bethesda which is in a legal battle with Interplay for them allegedly infringing their rights to the Fallout franchise (which Bethesda bought from Interplay although Interplay allegedly retained the rights to produce a Fallout MMO).
