soviet units
« on: September 05, 2008, 08:07:37 PM »
well, i decided to give suggestions for this as well...

mainly i think there should be a major difficulty for russian armour: the 88! the 88 recked havoc against russian armour like the panzerfaust, however while the t34 could stop and deploy its troops to kill infantry armed with pzfs, the 88 could hit the russians from range, and proved deadly.

what i suggest is that the t34 takes only 2-3 hits from an 88 to destroy: this will ensure balance and make sure that soviet tankists will not crush every opponent in the game... the t34 would serve as a spamming tank: little cost, but on the other hand very vulnerable to one thing: the 88, so useful in numbers

as for other units:

well i think guards need to be revamped slightly: mainly only being available to guards players: guards units were generally kept seperate from the rest of the red army, forming their own divisions and brigades: they may have come under the command of the stavka, but they were not to be commanded by conscript or even regular commanders

guards infantry would be divided into two groups: riflemen and guards

guards would be armed with ppsh 41s, be able to have stolen panzerfausts, satchel charges and ppsh 43s: they would serve as the attack element of guards infantry: think of stormtroopers with stg44s and panzershreks

riflemen would be armed with svt40s, and be upgradeable to have a PTRD at rifle and a DP28, or upgrade to a sniper squad for a large cost and have scoped svt40s and the camoflage ability (ie a squad of snipers) they would be similar to grenadiers in ability

both sqauds would have 4 men each and be quite hefty in price

as for guards armour, the player would be able to build the OT34, armed with a  ROKS-2 flamethrower in the lower hull mg position (keeping the main gun and coaxial mg); the KV-85, a special KV armed with an 85mm gun using the purchasable upgrade; and the t34 command vehicle which would be similar to the british command tank but still retain the main gun.

these are all for the moment, again please comment: i hope this helps the team...

Theres some things I like and some things I dont in this suggestion list. We will use some of the units you talked about. Our main infantry types are going to be basic, standard, and elite. Those are being represented by conscripts, regulars and red guard. There will be a variety or upgrades for these squads, as well as other support squads, like sappers and the command squad.

The way you are trying to balance with the t-34s, 88s and panzerfausts are not good. Our goal is to integrate the soviet union into the existing factions. This means we have to balance using existing units as stats foundation, and then modify them appropriately.

Also, things like salvaged fausts or lend lease bren carriers are too unoriginal, the red army had enough units on its own we cant all get in already.

Flamethrower tanks like you suggest are not good for gameplay. When tanks get too strong against infantry, combined arms suffer and games get boring.

We already have a detailed unit list, which we will release to the public at some point of time. You can already find some of it in the sneak peak thread.

thanks again: in the sneak peak, it appears that guards do not have access to ppshs  :-\: in reality, the guards used both svts and ppshs: perhaps u could include another guards unit with ppsh 43s: perhaps NKVD? as for the alreay included red guard, will they have any upgrades? it might be a good idea to add dp28 or PTRS upgrades...

thanks again

We thought about the infantry units long and hard. Our goal was to distinguish the units in a way so that all of them have some kind of use, even when you have unlocked all. For example, we didnt want to get conscripts or regulars out of commission once you have the Red Guard. We achieved this by making every infantry unit specialised through upgrades. For example:

Conscripts
- Weak at the beginning, but you can mass them effectively late game with global upgrades like standard rifles, molotov cocktails and commissars

Regulars
- Can specialise through weapon upgrades in close combat with PPshs or AT with PTRDs
- The global red flag upgrade makes them more suppression resistant

Red Guard
- very durable, with SN-42 Body Armor upgrade even more durable
- With SVTs they are good at long and medium range
- Have grenades and AT grenades
- Are basically good allrounders, but excel in no area

Like this, all infantry unit types have some use. Of course there will also be weapons teams and doctrine units in addition.

Returning to the ot34:

I don't think it would unbalance the game: tanks already use the lower mg over a longer range, while the ot34 would have an infantry flamethrower, not like the crocodile. This means that while the tank was still essentially a t34, it is improved at closer quaters against infantry, where they don't have much of a chance anyway without satchel charges or at
