As I have stated in the topic about the .30 cal machine guns, I thought some might find a short explaination about various weapons systems useful.

Although many here have a good understanding of weapon systems not all may. I did what I thought helpful in explaining the rolls of the .30 cal mg, as well as the .50 cal mg. And if it is wished I will write other such observations about other weapons systems. I am confused only as to why such statements as I have presented them should be percieved as a problem?

The what ifs. Its why so many people enjoy wargamming. What if Germany made the Tiger I its primary tank in 1942, or had pushed the developement of the Me 262 Jet fighter. I wish that a game would come out in which you could handle the stratigic situation, as in Hearts of Iron, and the Tactical as in COH. Ataris Axis & Allies RTS was a general attempt, but far to simplistic. I can only sit and hope a game company desides to do it right, so we can all explore the what if a bit more.

Many of us when we think about the idea of the machine gun the image of the browning M2 .50 cal comes to mind. Developed in 1918 as an anti armor weapon, it is the grandfather of all .50 cal machine guns. The .50 cal Machine gun came into its own during the second world war, becomming the principle fighter aircraft armament for many nations. The class of .50cal HMG had many uses since there development, its primary attributes being is bullets hitting power and its impressive range. Its employment is very much like the .30 cal HMG, but can be set further back over lapping the .30 cal field of fire, and protecting its lighter cousin. It should be noted that the .50 cal HMG never lost its ability to be devestating against light armored vehicles, and that many of WWII's early anti-tank Rifles where .50 cal, such as the Soviet PTRS-41, which went on to serve in the Korean war as well. The .50 fits a great nitch between the .30 cal and the anti tank gun, it is an effective killer if infantry, and no scout car or halftrack could ignore the fifties armor penetration ability.

The .30 cal HMG has been with us for well over 100 years now. Its design was made for one simple purpose to be able to direct a vast amount of rifle caliber firepower on target. Its principal target being enemy infantry. Various different .30 cal HMG's came into there own during WWI, and they sowed devestation across the battlefield of that war. The primary reason for the trench stalemate that came about During WWI was due to this class of weapon. Employment of these weapons is still the same today, generaly placed in a field fortification, it's elaboration time dependent, with access to a good field a fire. its purpose is to stop any attempt by infantry to advance; in essence to be a wall of lead.

The Eastern Front is the single most important front during the second world war. Its size and scope dwarf other theaters of war; on the eve of operation Barbarossa the axis powers had amassed 173 divisions from the baltic to the black sea, in comparison the Western Allies amassed at its peak during the Italian campaign a mere 25 divisions. The Soviet Union in June 1941 had 240 field divisions, of which 213 faced off against the Axis on the U.S.S.R's Western frontier. Many major advancements in weapons technology had there birth in due course by events on the eastern front, The Soviet Union has progressed from the T28 medium tank in the begining of the war, to what is for all acounts the best medium tank of the war the T34; and the Germans advanced there guns from the 50mm l42 of The Panzer III g-h models to the 75l43 of the Panzer IVf2, to the truly awe inspiring 75mm l70 of the Panther. And while the Soviets never truely mastered warfare on the tactical level as well as there German adversary, they mastered it far above the germans in the area of grand strategy.
