Eastern Front / Re: Sticky bombs.
« on: May 05, 2011, 09:10:56 PM »
The majority of actual sticky (using an adhesive substance) bombs had to be stuck on the tank at short range (Saving private Ryan actually got something right for once!!!). Many British Home Guard soldiers were killed when they tried to throw the sticky bombs on practice ranges and the bomb fell of the stick and exploded at their feet, nasty way to go.....

Another reason for all German tanks decreased reliability later in the war  was the need to use a mixture of petrol and ammonia to increase the range because of shortages, this wrecked the engines and filters after prolonged use, and as Zerstorer says if they didn't have spare parts they had to blow up the tanks.

[/quote]i was referring to the battles when they first saw combat. e.g. ferdinands had weaknesses (poor mobility, tech problems, no mg) but were very effective vs. enemy tanks. i just wanted to say that you can't say XY was a failure because of its first engagement.

loads of tanks had problems, the Panther was the most unreliable German tank of the war apart from the experimental tigers like the Sturmtiger. An interesting statistic i found about the panthers first combat 'out of 200 Panthers in the 4th Panzer Army 160 were out of action on the first day, nine days later only 43 were in German hands, the majority had broken down between railheads on the way to the front' The german tanks were best used defensively. e.g the only major german offensive in the west (the Bulge) was lead by Pz4's cos they were more reliable

Well with respect IJoe if you don't read my post you can't have an informed opinion of what i'm trying to suggest. If you feel the firebase itself is useless then surely my idea of adding an alternative is very relevant? Or as its is less work then the firebase itself needs to be improved. I Have noticed that the firebase is not very useful, thats why i'm suggesting it is given an alternative like. As brits or whermacht i use nebels, priests 25pdrs not infrequently, the soviets were renowned for their heavy artillery and i feel there should be a at least desirable artillery piece for the soviets
Unlike yourself (i'm guessing) most of my COH friends play Blitzkreig and whenever i look for an EF game theyre all locked private games, this forces me to play lots of skirmishes where the firebase is more useful against unimaginative AI.
@Paciat yes i realise its not an SP like the priest. I probably didn't make myself very clear earlier by calling it an SPG :-[. However it is more similar to a slow mobile 25pdr that you would move a couple of times a match. Like all SP guns it still needed to set up in a defensive position. Hummels and priests couldn't just drive around randomly shooting shells every 5 minutes as they do in COH, they needed to be part of a battery with ammo vehicles and stationary rangefinding equipment.

Just a suggestion here. Everyone is talking about rewards for the IS2 but the fact is it was the largest Tank the Soviets used in any numbers in WW2. I feel like we need a change of subject rather than the circular IS2 for IS3 debate.  ::)
Why not add the SP 203mm Howitzer M1931 (B-4) as a reward for the Firebase? This heavy howitzer was used throughout the war and was used a great deal in the street fighting in Berlin to blast German strong points. I realize however EF is not like the battle for Berlin and I don't think it would be good as an assult gun like the Stug 42. It could however be good as a heavy SPG. It could also be doctrine specific to the Breakthrough Doctrine as it is self propelled. It would however not be an SPG like the priest as historically was alot slower. It could however have the ability to direct fire one or two shells when vetted up like the 25pdr in Blitzkreig mod.
It could be able to move but have to lock down to fire. It could take about 20-30 seconds to pack up and move. Speed could be about the same speed as the Kingtiger, allowing it to support one offensive then move up to the next start line.
It could have the range of an un-supercharged 25pdr (i think thats less than the Firebase) making the mobility factor worthwhile on the larger maps.
The gun could be a call-in or it could be produced in the support barracks after the Tank hall is built. I have no idea what cost it should be but it probably should be hard capped at 2.
However I realize there would be the problem of providing a suitable model. WOT have made a 152mm howitzer as used on the B-4's sister gun the B-2. I know WOT have given permission for other mods to use their models as the Anti Japanese Mod showed. Maybe this gun could be mixed with a small tracked chassis (basically a larger Kettengrad) or the B-2 with the 152 Howitzer could be used instead if its too much trouble to make a 203mm model.
Again this is only a suggestion so lets have some mature debate rather than Hitler video's from Inglorious Bastards as much as i love that film!!! ;)

Use this topic to discuss about new soviet units or reward soviet units.

I appreciate your points  but most people who play mods casually like myself haven't the faintest idea how to apply different skin packs and such like.
I realise it might be easy for you and all the other clued up people out there but if the mod wants to increase its downloads it needs to provide for people who haven't a clue.
This is why the more popular mods like EF and BK have installers, its more accesible to more people.
On the subject of different reward units, why not do what BK have done and add lots of new units to faction pools(I realise that they have now implemented limited reward units).
While i realise this isn't really how reward units are meant to be used you don't have to build them.

And yes my idea wouldn't work unless devs could find a way for AI to use reward units.

Yeah i looked at the 'Who Dares Wins' page and found this

'All Changes to the Commonwealth faction are togglable through a single optional Reward "unit".'

the 'Marine Commando's' is a REWARD faction, if the devs did the same with each faction and just changed the skin.
you could have a winter army and summer army, using the same technique.
It would be crude but it could work

8
yeah but i heard that they can't make the clothes change when the map changes, i think it would have to be done manually

9
I was thinking, what if you could change the skins of the units your using by choosing a different unit in the rewards panel, exactly the same unit and stats and weapons but a different skin.

im sure devs could alter interface so that u can select a 'winter army' or a 'summer army'.

possible?
ps, dont know whether someone has already come up with this so dont hate me if they have

Don't know why people call the update OP, its not like you can build loads of units because it should be expensive.

Lovin the mod and hope for more :)
