Title: The Eastern Front OST needs you!
Post by: Alex Cottrell on August 24, 2011, 01:00:58 PM
Thanks to some wonderful donations from Pariah and quite a bit of saving on my part, I've mustered quite a bit of money to get some new kit for the next music update. One of the new additions you can expect to hear are choirs. Now, I don't speak a word of Russian and would probably sound like an idiot trying to read Russian script, so that's where YOU come in!  :D

What I need?
Some lyrics for Russian choirs to sing. They don't have to be full songs, nor do they have be Grammy Award-Winning. But they must be themed alongside this mod - so make them victorious, or mournful, or proud about times of war or traditional Soviet culture. If you speak Russian, then you're probably already aware of what I'm thinking of. Please accompany your lyrics with their English translation and - most importantly - the phonetic pronunciation of the lyrics. It's very important that I know exactly how these words should be sung in Russian. I know how picky you lot are, so I don't want to get it wrong and have people saying 'no, it's pronounced like THIS!'

When do I need it by?
There's no rush, as I know this is not exactly a 5-minute job, but as soon as possible would be great. The quicker I have these words, their translations and their pronunciations, the quicker I can get this music done and blaring out your speakers.

Where do I send my lyrics to?
Please email them to alexcottrellsound@hotmail.co.uk - I'm not here to audition, I will accept any and all entries.

How do I know if my words have been used?
I'll tell you! And I'll be sure to give you proper credit. I've no idea how many of you might be able/willing to help me out, but if I get loads of submissions, obviously I can't use them all.

So, that's it! If you can speak Russian and you want to hear your words of glory or Soviet pride being sung by an orchestral choir in the near future, PLEASE help me out.

Thanks!  :)

Lotta rain = flooding (unless you live on a hill like me ^^) = drowning :(

Lotta wind = flyong objects = casualties :(

So hurricanes can cause significant damage :P

I understand. On you saying about not being a musical mind - they don't have to be brilliant, just appropriate. The actual words themselves will be more about giving the music the proper ethnic texture rather than actually trying to tell grand stories through song. Stay safe neosdark  :)

Everytime i build a T34, this music comes to my mind. Im actually singing this when i drive towards the enemy giving him headache on mumble  ;D

Soviet ww2 songs- Sacred War (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5YDk1kCrMU#)

What about collecting russian music on the internetz? There are english translations. Making a own text and let the google translator translate it into a really crappy russian language and then asking a russian to make proper russian ... aw well i ll do it

For the Motherland

Up, up comrades, get ready!
Our Motherland is calling you to the service
Under her sound to our voices be heard
bring death and destruction on our enemies

The hour of victory is almost near
the enemy's armies defeated by our hands
Nevertheless we want to continue to march
Forward! Assault against the enemy's country

refrain 1

Depart not marched back, always forward
not a piece of land to the enemy tp steal for
Comrades, our lives are donated to good
If we sacrifice it to our country

refrain 2

Our bullets are the enemy's pain
Our knives will kill them
No forgiveness no mercy
Down with the fascist powers!

refrain 3

Courage, sacrifice and hatred of the enemy
this should be our strongest weapon
Rather we will give our lives
as our pride and our homeland

Google translator did that:  :P

PS: I didnt pay attention on rythm because it can´t be translated into russian. Feel free to edit it

Good work, I'm assuming those words are of your own making? Just what I'm looking for!  ;D Only you missed out the most important part, I can't read russian script so I also need to know how it's pronounced in order to get the choirs right.

If you're not sure what I mean, an example in German would be:
Panzer -> Pant-sa
Stielhandgranate -> Shteel-hant-granater

Is that possible?

EDIT: I understand that the above examples don't work if you read them literally with an English accent, but with a German one they make sense. I have a general grasp that in Russian, most (if not all) 'R's are rolled and that vowel sounds are different.

Yepp

Me neither lol. I asked Neosdark to help out

EDIT: I understand that the above examples don't work if you read them literally with an English accent, but with a German one they make sense.

They were made in german then translated into english then translated into russian using google translator

I think for a russian speaking it would be less work to edit a existing text then to make a complete new one.

It would seem that Google Translate has a phonetic translator so I might be able to use that (my fault for not looking!) but I'm not sure how accurate it is. This is how Google says it sounds -

Za Rodinu

Vverh, vverh tovarishchi, prigotovʹtesʹ!
Nasha Rodina zovet tebya na sluzhbu
Pod yee zvuki nashego golosa byli uslyshany
nesut smertʹ i razrusheniya na nashih vragov

Chas pobedy blizok
armii protivnika poterpeli porazhenie ot nashih rukah
Tem ne menyee my hotim prodolzhitʹ marsh
vpered! Napadenie protiv strany protivnika

Refrain 1

Otpravlenie ne shli nazad, vsegda vpered
ne uchastok zemli, chtoby ukrastʹ nashi vraga T
ovarishchi, nasha zhiznʹ pozhertvoval horoshim
Yesli my zhertvuem nashyeĭ strane

Chorus 2

Nashi shary boli protivnika
Nashi nozhi ubʹet yee
Net proshcheniya nikakoĭ poshchady
Doloĭ fashist·skih derzhav!

Chorus 3

Muzhestvo, zhertvennostʹ i nenavistʹ k vragu
eto dolzhno bytʹ nashim samym silʹnym oruzhiem
Skoryee my dadim nashyeĭ zhizni
kak nasha gordostʹ i nasha rodina

...does that look right to you?  :P

EDIT: Again, not a real speaker, so I'm unsure of its accuracy, but this site can apparent read aloud in russian - http://text-to-speech.imtranslator.net/ (http://text-to-speech.imtranslator.net/)

Sure, I'll also change the lyrics to be a bit more Soviet era-song friendly, mainly cause these have no rhythm and the new ones sound a lot more Russian

Also, I  have to mention that some Russian letters such as ы and ь are near impossible to properly create a sound while using an English keyboard.

ь is called a soft symbol and it softens the consonant that it comes before usually represented as an ' in English. For example a regular т sounds as in English Tie, but т' is a soft T. ы makes a sound that resembles the first I in interesting, and as such I will represent it as an I where ever it comes up.

ъ hardens the consonant before it, but it's a very rare letter and I doubt it will even be used in this song, if it does come up I will denote it #.

Other letters of notice are и which sounds like an English E which I will represent with an E, while e in Russian sounds like yEa (with minimum emphasis on the a and y). and I will represent as E'

ё which sounds similar to yo (not the stupid yo, yo, nigga crap, but just phonetically) and I will represent it as such.

у sounds something like the O's in Moooooooooo, and I will denote as a pair of O's (oo)

й is a strange letter that changes the sound of the letter that comes after it, a becomes ai (phonetically, not like AI, but ai as in like aiya)  O becomes Oi, (like Oi mate) I will represent it as J

я is like the German Ja and I will denote it as such.

ж makes a sound like Zh, as seen in General Zhukov's name, It will be denoted as Zh.

a sounds like ahhhh (when the Doctor tells you to open your mouth), but will be denoted as A

ю sounds like an English U or you (depends on which ever you prefer) and will be represented as U

As such enough of the boring details, If you have any questions I will gladly help with pronunciations over Mumble.

(Nas Rodena Mat' zovyot)
(E zvook e'yo golosa)
(Poogae't nashekh vragov.)

(Chas pobe'di yzh blezok)
(E vrag pobezhdyon bezhet)
(E ne' nasha ze'mlja, a fashestov)
(pyctinna pre'd name le'zhet)

(Vpe'ryod, ne shagoo nazad)
(ne pjade ze'mle vragoo!!)
(zhezn' otdannaja v bou)

(Ne' boode't poshadi vragoo)
(Ne ot poole, ne ot shtika)
(Ne zhaloste, ne nroshe'n'ja)
(ne' boode't Fashestskem psam)

I'am also making a small Wav. file, that you can use, with more precise pronunciations, but since the site doesn't allow for them, can you please provide me your e-mail so I can send it to you.

Why have removed my message??? Whether my offers and what of them will be accepted??? Explain what not so. It is desirable in Russian. It is possible to throw off on my mail

I apologize, if I have made that that not so. At me on English 2, and on it I translate all with the dictionary

So that this doesn't come a surprise or a disappointment to you when the soundtrack gets progressively updated - it has emerged that Russian lyrics are not really possible at this time and the OST will remain instrumental. Without a real choir capable of singing accurately in Russian, any attempt to synthesise it serves only to do the music and culture of Russian choirs a disservice. That said, this has still been very useful, so thanks to all of you for your help - the EF community continues to be awesome! Hopefully we'll get a chance to do this properly in the future.

EDIT: Just to clarify - there will still be choirs, but right now it's not possible to have them singing any real russian lyrics without it sounding obviously fake or inaccurate. I know that the music may not seem like the most important thing in a game to some of you, but I know how passionate people get about this mod and if a job is worth doing it's worth doing properly. As of yet it's not possible to do it properly so it's best to wait until I can.

Hey whats the name of the song(s) when you first upload the EF screen and you see the menu ???. And if there is no name can you upload the custom made song :P Thank you :D

The music on the menu is currently 'The Red Tide' (a portion of which is heard also on the soviet vehicles and infantry trailer), 'Advance!' (a portion of which is heard on the Ostheer teaser trailer) and 'Far From Over' which is the one that opens with a solo clarinet. The whole soundtrack, including the music that's coming for the Ostheer, will be available for high quality download once it's completely finished. I hope that answers your question  :)

Mais I also speak Russian, if you didn't notice on the other page, I posted a whole song and proper translations.

The problem lies with his software and or chorus being unable to properly replicate Russian voices, not quite sure which one it is, but I think it was the software.

Thanks for the kind words guys  :)

Hey Alex. How do you make the music for SU anyways :P? I was always curious about that. You said you have a choir. Do you like hire them when you need then or do you work/own them ??? Nice works anyways ^^

All the music is made on my own computer at the moment - I have quite a lot of expensive music software including professional orchestral sample libraries. The 'choir' is one of these software instruments that is able to replicate the sound of real words. If you have them singing in English, Latin and some European languages like German they sound almost indistinguishable from the real thing, but Russian has such a interesting, unique and nuanced sound that it is very difficult to accurately reproduce it through synthesis. This is not to say that other languages are 'worse' or 'less interesting' but Russian is certainly quite subtle in its differences and it's not worth making it sound silly just to shoehorn this extra feature into the soundtrack.

Much like the rest of the EF Team, I'm only a student and do this in whatever free time I can get my hands on, so employing a real choir is not practical or financially possible at the moment. But that is what the future is for!  ;D

That must be a nice piece of software if it can make sounds that sound just like real ppl ^-^

Maybe you should try to make a russian song with russia lyrics. Who knows, maybe it'll be good. Or we'll just get a nice laugh out of it  ;)

Its just I wanna hear it w/o having to load COH EF(which takes a considerable amount of time, not sure why) :P. Im not trying to sound impatient or anything just would like to hear it on my comp :D. It doesn't have 2 sound exactly like it. Its just I tried looking for it on youtube but cant find something that sounds similar :-\

If Eastern Front has taught its fans one thing, it's that all good things come to those who wait  :P

The full OST will be released together once it's finished and you will have the highest quality, sharpest, snappiest version of it available to you then :) This is because the soundtrack is still being made and I'm changing things all the time to make sure the final product is the best it can possibly be - I don't want you to have to settle for second best!

Until then, you'll just have to keep playing EF I guess ;)

*applauds*

I asked for a choir in the youtube video a long time ago, and now it's happening. You have no idea how happy I am to see this. The music of EF has come so far, and the pieces we have now are brilliant. I can't wait to see how beautiful they will be with a choir.

I do have some basic musical and russian skills, so I'd be happy to help out if something comes up, but it seems to me that people who truly know what they're talking about have got this handled.
