Post by: Rikard Blixt on March 27, 2011, 12:27:59 PM
Hello Eastern Front Fans,

As many of you know, in 1.31 we released the first pieces of our Original Soundtrack (OST). I've received a numerous request to be able to listen to it outside of the game, and because we listen to you they can now be found at youtube. Company of Heroes: Eastern Front OST (http://bit.ly/gnn63T).

icarusfoundyou, the EF OST composer did that great work. Just look for his name on the "team" page.

You've done some really nice work, thank you!

If you will go on composing another soundtracks, I would recommend maybe some variation of Shostakovich's war symphonies, especially his 7th and 8th symphony. Which music could be more authentic then his, being composed in Soviet Union during war!

Some very interesting pieces; nice work. It would be nice if some more of these musical pieces were made, preferably a little bit more communist to go with the main menu and that Russian Opera song.

Which bring me onto my question: Why is the Russian Opera song not in the playlist on youtube? The one that is ocassionally heard in the main menu, with the men speaking Russian, but it sounds kinda operish, I can't explain it anymore than that.

^^ because it's not russian at all.

Nice music. I like most of it. It sounds so classic and serious, just like in most soviet documentaries about the Great Patriotic (we don't usually speak out "War" in this word combination - it's a sort of a tradition here in Russia).
Thanks a lot to the author, Great job!

I like The Red Tide song.

Anymore songs you plan to add? Sacred War sounds like a good victory song.

I like The Red Tide song.

I'd think of something more cheerful for the winning melody: the "Sacred War" was released shortly after the invasion, and was meant as an inspiring song (and a perfect one!). For the winning screen something like "Katiusha", "Poliushko-pole", "Proschanie slavianki" (slavic girl's parting), "Raspriagaite hloptsy koney" (unharness your horses, guys), or "Davai zakurim" (Let's smoke up) would fit better.
Basically, anything less dramatic (and even tragic), 'cause the "Sacred War" is 'till now treated almost like a prayer or a national hymn (I'd bet most people in Russia have more respect for this song than for a hymn, actually).

My thought was Hans Zimmer in mind while listening. My favourite is the "red tide". Good work from the composer, it's really sounds like Zimmer's work. :)

I was thinking it'd be inspirational for further victories.
Also, the only thing more melancholy than a battle won is a battle lost. Sure you may've won the battle, but at what cost?
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: IJoe on March 29, 2011, 05:03:41 AM
Well, IMO, that song is kind o' "personal" to a huge amount of people, living and dead, everyone, or almost everyone in Russia has his own family tragedy, or drama at the least, about this war to remember, and this song (surely one of the greatest about and from the time of the Great Patriotic) always reminds about these things, brings up true sadness and compassion. So, out of respect (couldn't find a better word) for the feelings of so many, it shouldn't really be included as a part of entertainment, which a game is. I myself thought about including it as a main menu theme, but then, when I took some time to think about it (would be nice, if I did it more often, really), I came to a sheer conclusion, it's not to be bothered in vain.
So, for game purposes, IMO, "Poliushko-pole" ("Полюшко-поле" - Field, field wide-open) would do better. And it's a great sounding one too:Полюшко-поле/ Polyushko pole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_d8WAI3dLc#)

IJoe, that's a great song but that version really doesn't do it any favours. I have a very clear version that sounds fantastic.
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: IJoe on March 29, 2011, 04:18:30 PM
I wasn't proposing particularly this version. It's here only as a sample to represent how good it sounds.

BTW it hasn't got a word in it about the Red Army, since the song itself is at least a couple of hundreds years old, but later versions, that sort o' "brought it up to date" do have words about communism, rural communes etc.
Most likely, you've got one of those.

Heh I wouldn't bet against that seeing as my version's sung by the Red Army Choir. Took awhile to find:

Russian Red Army Choir - Polyushka Polye (Song of the Plains) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuWE8GJnN5w#)

While I was looking I also found this really nice instrumental version:

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words on the music  :)
I confess I'm not all that pleased with some of it so far, so it's still a work in progress really. As blackbishop mentioned, there is a planned update for the soundtrack in 1.40.

Also, once the music is completely finished, I'll provide a high quality download for your listening pleasure.

Suggestions:
1) You might wanna take some merry song as a leitmotiv (=main theme) for some new track, and work it out into some classical sound (that's what many great russian classic composers did)
2) Some winds (instruments), like cavalry horns, and the rest of 'em, would be nice.

Yeah you could sample some impressive and/or famous melodies and include them in your classical compostions, maybe also change them to be played by strings or wind sections.

In fact, Icarusfoundyou did use some traditional melodies as a main theme for some of his works here, but what I suggest, is he could probably use some particularly cheerful motive for one of his new pieces of art.

Greetings icarusfoundyo!

I got (EF1.3.1) up and running yesterday. I haven't had a chance to play the game but I hung around in the lobby long enough to listen to your tune.

You did a good job with the theme. It has that nice pastoral intro and modulations in your build-up to the Crescendo. And the Crescendo didn't get too loud. (My wife goes nuts when that happens). Something sounds weird when the tubas (?) come in. give it a listen.

Very evocative as  a praelude to battle. It sets a good tone to start the game in.

BTW what do you play? Me, I play the banjo, and a little Cajun Accordian. I play Old Time Stringband Music and Sing American and British Folksong. I am partial to music and songs from the 20's to 40's.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Just to answer a few questions...

There will be an update to the Soviet Menu Music in the next patch and I have every intention of doing extra music after this - including a set of pieces for the Ostheer too. Also, once it's all finished, I'll be making high quality MP3s (much better sound quality than you'll hear in game or on YouTube) available for download.

Something sounds weird when the tubas (?) come in. give it a listen.

Which piece are you talking about? How many minutes/seconds in is it?

BTW what do you play? Me, I play the banjo, and a little Cajun Accordian. I play Old Time Stringband Music and Sing American and British Folksong. I am partial to music and songs from the 20's to 40's.

I'm a guitarist and have also self taught myself piano. I'm currently in a musical duo called Wylde Green where I write, record and produce the music and the other guy writes the lyrics. I also produce other singer/songwriter artists as well. Like I said, I've never done Russian Music before and completely orchestral soundtracks are not something I do as much as, say, electronic or ambient music - so it's nice to have a challenge!

"Sacred war" is way too sacred for a (stupid) game, while RA 3 "Hell march" is too stupid, even for such game.

Trust me man, it's totally worth it. MP3s are good for storage (if you have a small flash drive, like me), since they are so small, but if you want good sound quality, they just won't do.
Title: Re: Songs from the Front

I convertered one mp3 to wav, and for me music is the same, no changes. Only difference in size of file, from 5.5mb to 30mb. Anyway i will use mp3, because i need more space in my HDD.

Well, there are certain factors you need to take into consideration:

-How good are your speakers/headphones?
-How good is your sound card?
-How good is your hearing?

It may depend on what type of music you listen to too, but i'm not sure about that.
Title: Re: Songs from the Front

@DzierzanPL
You can't change mp3 to WAV because WAV is a higher quality format. You can retrograde codecs (i.e. FLAC to MP3 or WAV to MP3), but you can't improve the sound from nothing.

Well pariah, i want listen music, no matter how it's good, i want hear it ;).

1. Headphones are good, new, good quality. But speakers are old (2 speakers + bass speaker), so i intend to buy new and better.
2. Realtek HD Definiton Audio
3. LOL

And i'm listening everything, from heavy metal to classic music.

I don't know. I have program to convert music but i'm mostly using this to convert something and put this to my telephone. Maybe you have right, it's not working to improve quality.
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: Alex Cottrell on July 05, 2011, 03:18:41 PM
You can't convert an MP3 to Wav (or indeed any higher quality audio format) and get better quality. Once the audio has been compressed there's next to nothing that changing the codec will do.

With MP3s it's important to maintain a high bitrate (always 320kbps!) to ensure a decent listening experience without the usual aliasing and artefacts. With that said, I garauntee the average listener can listen to MP3s with a bitrate as low as 128 and not tell the difference between that and a Wav or a FLAC. For me, personally, as a composer and producer, I would say that there is absolutely nothing wrong with storing high bitrate MP3s as your primary means of listening to music. Sure, if you listen hard enough you will find better quality in less lossy formats - but a good tune is a good tune!

I keep all music that I record personally backed up in Wav and occasionally FLAC or Ogg Vorbis to ensure there is always a 'master' version at the highest possible quality that can then be transferred as an MP3, if necessary. Don't be ashamed of MP3s! They are lossy and they can be buggy at low bitrates - but they are not shit!
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: pariah on July 05, 2011, 03:50:55 PM
I have a program called "Free RIP", which converts sound files into other sound files. I spent some time comparing the various audio files it has available, and i found Wav to be the best (and 1 of the largest), and MP3 to be the worst (and smallest).
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: Alex Cottrell on July 05, 2011, 03:56:47 PM
It's not what you're converting into, it's what you're converting FROM that makes the difference. Are you converting lossless formats (FLAC, Wav etc) into lossy formats (MP3, WMA, Vorbis) and/or vice versa?
You should find that any MP3 above 160Kbps will be indistinguishable from CD quality audio formats.
Title: Re: Songs from the Front
Post by: pariah on July 05, 2011, 04:03:52 PM
I like to copy my music from the C.D. to my computer, since it makes things so much easier. And while i'm at it, i might as well convert them to a better quality. The standard conversion file is W.M.A. i think, which is pretty average to me, so i convert them to Wav.

Well I can't afford the tech required to get choirs at the moment, but there is that donate button in my signature...

Now now pariah, you've given more than enough already  :)

But i don't mind giving more, if you need it. ;)

I was thinking though, i believe i read somewhere a long time ago about the prospect of hiring animators, but the devs didn't like that idea; They think it would be best if this is volunteer work, made by the fans. So, would the devs mind if Alex hired a choir? Or do you want the choir to be Eastern Front fans?

I wouldn't be hiring a choir, that's far too expensive and I'd need all manner of kit hired or borrowed from various sources to get it together. There is a rather fancy piece of software that's about £280 that has real choirs that sing real words that you type in (approved by devs no less!)

As much as I'd like to get a real choir - and a real orchestra - that's trying to run before I can walk I'm afraid  :-\

Wait wait wait... Those poor people are trapped in a piece of software?! :o Somebody get them out of there! :'(

So do you have any idea how much it would cost to hire a proper choir and orchestra? We could do our best to get you as much money as possible.

It's not really worth the cost, considering the project. If you really want to help get choirs into Eastern Front, this package is your best bet by far.

Well, if you insist. I'll have to work out how much to give you. (I don't speak pounds. ;))

Post Merge: July 06, 2011, 05:08:49 PM
280 British pounds = 408.59 Australian dollars. Fitting price, since most Brit things are 280 Manpower. :D

I'm not really that rich; I just don't have anything to buy, so my money tends to build up. Although i am planning to buy a new toothbrush soon...

Anyway, i'll just give you a round $500, since that's the largest size the reload cards come in, making a total of $1000. Wow, this is the second highest amount of money i've donated to someone! This feels good! :D

Hm, well if you want to consider my donations to Alex as Eastern Front donations, then this is actually the highest amount i've donated to someone...

I don't really know what to say, you've probably contributed more to me becoming a serious musician than anyone else I know...and we've never even met! I guess I'll repay you by doing the best damn job I can!  :)

Bloosn, if you go back to page 4 of this thread there's a link to the most recent set of music heard on the main menu. This is all getting an update very soon so it'll be out of date before long - but feel free to download and thanks for listening  :)

No updates make me very ANGRY >:( What is taking so long!

The fact that we are trying our best to get this mod balanced completely. Of course this won't be the final patch concerning balance but this will fix a lot of problems and introduce new ideas into the Soviets. That is all I believe I can say at the moment.

Just be patient. Enjoy any OP factors in Soviets while you can because they will not be there soon :)

How exactly does balancing the game relate to updating the music? ???

I am sorry about the confusion, I was talking about the Ostheer update. Then I saw that it was going to be late since then so problem solved.
