keep pushing fowards with your troops and consolidate (caping/decapping) with pioneers unless you are doing a pio spam.

mines, bobytraps and barbed wire, place the mines around the plag, bobytrap the flag(not all factions can do this) and surround the flag with wire so they need to cut through that first. if up against americans with veicles capping territory also build tanktraps.

Let me give the easy AI a whirl and I'll get back to you. I'm not an uber player but I will see what I can do.

Use this tactic:
Normally the only things that seem to get by are fast, weak infantry units, so if youre playing:

PE: Have a reserve of 2 SCs or 1 AC, OR just use a IHT with your main infantry force (Simply load up one squad then go for the kill), so that way you have a quick reaction to those annoying buggers.

Wehr: Use HTs or Bikes

Im no good with allies b/c Ive been playing Axis since day 1.

The only thing CPU can do is blobing and capping. (Old AI couldnt even blob)

Dig trenches (propaganda) if youre Soviets and defend them with constripts (0 pop), make MP44 blobs (dont retreat whole blobs, just units that took damage) and bobytrap if PE, use MGs + any unit that will kill suppressed enemy infantry.

Have you tried giving orders with SHIFT key? (multiply orders for 1 unit)
Its much easier to cap, withdraw vechicles (so they will not drive thru enemy territory), plant mines, build defences, repair few vehicles with 1 unit...

When playing the cpu on ANY difficulty, simply do this:
Divide the map into 3 different parts (Your choosing) two of those areas focus on defense, and one area, full fledge offensive, and use light T1 offensive units to plug up the "hole" in the start of the game, the CPU tends to not use exact counters (Mortars,Flame) when facing a dug in force. It always just uses brute force to try to overwhelm the obstacle. Its a full proof plan, and it has never failed me against any CPU

if you are Wehr or American, you can build observation posts. If you are PE you can make scout cars lock down at strategic places.

you can also build roadblocks and mg's at strategic points (this is especially effective on big maps)

or you can just build one very very very long defensive line. (this is easy if you do it right, BUT it will result in a very very very very long game, or a stalemate).

Some Hotkeys for you to try:

Shift: Holding Shift while making orders for troops will let them follow the commands in the order you give them:
Example:
Pioneers: Build Bunker, Capture Fuel Point A, Capture Ammo Point B, Set up Wire at Ammo Point B, Go to East Bridge.

Space Bar: Anything that pops up on the side, if you hit space bar, takes you right to it, whether it be an upgrade, production completion, or even a arty attack on your base.

. : the Period (.) takes you to the next Idle infantry unit, this allows you to take full efficiency when you need it because you can cycle through troops that are doing jack shit ATM.

, : The Comma (,) is the EXACT same as the period, but instead of infantry it applies to vehicles.

No kidding...hit the pause key!

Gives you a bit time to find CPU's troops, esp. on big maps.  You can issue commands during pause as well. 

I can beat CPU hard using pause, but that maybe considering cheating.  But hey, the CPU has no reflex time while I have to move the mouse!  : )
